Emile Jansen aka Emile YX?, B-boy War-lock or A-free-Can I, was born in 1968 in Grassy Park, the Cape Flats, Cape Town, South Africa. He attended Montague Primary School, De Klip Primary School and St Owens High School. Emile has been involved with Hip Hop Culture since 1982. He started as a b-boy for Pop Glide Crew and later was a founding member of the legendary South African Hip Hop Group, Black Noise. Emile qualified as a teacher at Wesley Training College and taught at Battswood Primary for three years before selecting to teach through Hip Hop Culture.

Emile is often considered to be one of the Godfathers of South African Hip Hop and continues to be an active B-boy, MC, Graffiti artist and hip hop activist. In 1990, he published the first edition of Da Juice Hip Hop Magazine.  Black Noise became the first group to have all the hip hop elements represented on stage. It also gave birth to the “Do for Self” mentality that gave birth to Emile creating numerous events and products for Black Noise and others in the hip hop community. It also saw him teach in various communities and getting involved in youth development and other social work. Some of the events and projects he created are African Battle Cry since 1997, Heal The Hood Project since 1998, Battle of the Year South Africa since 1999, African Hip Hop Indaba since 2000, Shut Up Just Dance since 2005, Freestyle Sessions since 2007, Heal the Hood Hip Hop School in 2008, Project Breaking since 2008 and has sent more than 70 young dancers to “Battle of the Year”, World B-boy/Breakdance Championships held in Germany. He has also sent youth on exchanges to Sweden, England, Italy and Norway. Emile currently manages Black Noise and has secured tours for the group to Germany, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, United States of America, Namibia and the Netherlands.

Emile has also rhymed on and released 7CD’s with Black Noise and two solo albums called “Who am I” in 2000 and “Roar –Live it Loud” in 2007. Since 1995 he has also released 6 Heal the Hood compilation CD’s and albums for Plain Madnizz, Lions of Zion, Ancient Men and Isaac Mutant. In 1995 he also wrote a booklet called ‘What is Hip Hop?’ In 2004 he released his first book named “My Hip Hop is African and Proud”. In the same year he also released the first Hip Hop DVD in South Africa called ‘Hip Hop How To Vol#1”. He has since released “Hip Hop How To Vol#2” on DVD and numerous DVDs of the events that he has hosted. In 2008 he released the book,  R.A.P.S.S,  “Rhymes, Articles, Poetry, Short Stories and Sketches” for youth from the Cape Town. 2009 is the 21st Anniversary of South African Pioneer Hip Hop Group, Black Noise of whom Emile is a founder member. This year Emile wrote “ B-Boy Syllabus Grade One”  and taught it to 15 dancers to teach Monday – Saturday in Communities throughout the Cape Flats.
